From the Kane Republican Newspaper on 22 December 1965: TRAGEDY: "My son was a very strong disciplinarian and his purpose was very clear in his mind when he went to Viet Nam". That was the comment Monday night of a grief-stricken Pittsburgh mother who had just learned her son was killed in action on Saturday. Mrs. Harold L. Tweedy said her son, Army 2nd Lt. Stuart K. Tweedy, 23, "thought he was doing just what he should do for his country".

Mrs. Tweedy and her husband, president of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, were notified by the Defense Department that their son had been killed by a bullet through the lungs while on a search and destroy mission with the 1st Air Cavalry Division.

Lt. Tweedy joined the Army in August 1964 after graduating from Bethany, W. Va., College. He was to have been married in October to a classmate Esther Rickert of Washington, D.C., but was sent to "Viet Nam in September.

BETHANY - A $10,000 scholarship memorializing Ihe first Bethany College graduate to lose his life in Viet Nam, Lt. Staurt King Tweedy, has been established his his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Tweedy, Pittsburgh.

Lt Tweedy was killed on a search and destroy mission Dec. 18, 1965, in VietNam. He was buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 31, 1965.

His father, Harold L. Tweedy is president of First Federal Savings Loan Association of Pittsburgh. The Tweedy Memorial Scholarship is open to additional contributions from classmates and the recipient of this scholarship will be selected by the college without regard lo sex. religion, race or nationality. Lt. Tweedy, an economics major, graduated high school in 1961. He enlisted in the United States Army in August, 1962.
