from The Virtual Wall®

Please read this whole page before you write to us.
Our part-time, all-volunteer, staff will try to reply to you within five days.

If you could not find a name:
The casualty records from the Department of Defense contained many spelling errors of names or home-of-record. Unit assignments were wrong or omitted. We continually work to correct those errors and omissions.

The Last Name index pages, Wall Panel index pages, and State and City index pages list ALL of the names and home-of-record as they are in the database. Please be sure to look there.

Our Units index pages are not complete at this time. A name not found on a unit index page should be on the other index pages linked above. If the casualty's unit is correct on his individual memorial page, then we have that information in the database and his name will be on a unit index page when our software changes are finished.

The most common reasons for not finding a name are slight variations in spelling, like Connor vs Conner, or Read vs Reed and the fact that on the state index pages casualties are listed under their official home of record, which may not be their home town or birth place. Please be sure to look in all three columns before writing to us.

Most browsers provide the ability to search for a word or phrase within the page you are looking at by pressing CTRL then F, and then enterring the word or phrase to find in the pop-up box. That feature could help you find a name that is listed under a city or town you did not expect.

If you only know a casualty date or approximate casualty date, you can search our Wall Panel Index Pages. The names on the Wall are arranged by date of casualty, so you can first find the right Wall Panel by date. While you are viewing an individual panel index page, hover your mouse pointer over any name. A small window will pop up showing the line number and the casualty date of the first name on the line (East Wall) or the second name on the line (West Wall).

If you still can not find a name, please send us details so we can investigate and either fix the error or help you find that person's memorial page on The Virtual Wall. If you could not find a remembrance that was here before:
We are sorry to report that we misplaced a few personal remembrances (not complete memorial pages). One loss was caused by a hard disk failure and another loss caused by human error when we reorganized our database and software to provide our new web site appearance.

If you placed a remembrance on this web site but can't find it now, please tell us so we can search through our old databases to restore the remembrance. Please give us a few details such as the person's name and home town, branch, unit, or date of casualty, approximately when you submitted the remembrance, and your name and relationship. Please tell us by sending email to Webmaster@VirtualWall.org

The mission of The Virtual Wall is to provide the means for relatives and friends of the fallen to honor and remember them. We intended there to be a truly personal connection between the requestor and the person memorialized: being a relative, a friend, a friend of a relative, or having worn a POW/MIA bracelet.

For several years we accepted messages from others, such as "I am a high school student studying the Vietnam War," or "I am a grateful American," or "I am a fellow veteran." While we understand the intent, we became swamped by so many such requests that processing them delayed serving the people we intended to serve.

We now have to decline requests from persons without a personal connection as described above.
