During a training session outside the base camp with other members of the unit, an enemy booby trap was detonated, killing 6 men. Those killed in the explosion were:


SGT Delbert Porter was survived by his mother Kathryn Marie (Williams) Porter (1922-2012) and father Herschel Wayne Porter (1920s-2010). and brother David (Shirley) Porter, and sisters Darlene (Ernie) Barnick and Glenda (Leon) Sharp. He was also survived by his fiancee, Mary Prater according to her 2009 tribute on the internet.

He was laid to rest in Red Brush Cemetery, Louisville, Clay County, Illinois. His parents are also interred there.
