A Note from The Virtual Wall On 23 June 1969 a C-130 (tail number 61-0965) of the 773rd Tactical Airlift Squadron from Tan Son Nhut was conducting a resupply flight to the Special Forces base at Katum. While flying at 3000 feet it was hit in the port wing area by radar-controlled quad .50 caliber antiaircraft gunfire. The hits caused a fire and engine failure, and the C-130 spun into the ground. There were no survivors of the crash. The bodies of four crewmen were recovered shortly afterwards, but the other two men were not repatriated until 1994. The crew consisted of LTC Jean A. Kearby, Austin, MN MAJ William H. Condit, Worthington, OH (remains repatriated 1994) CPT Gary E. Brunner, Racine, WI 1LT Terry M. Reed, Randolph AFB, TX (remains repatriated 1994) SSGT Billy W. McDonald, Maryneal, TX SSGT George C. Peters, Roodhouse, IL Staff Sergeant Peters was assigned to the 773rd Tactical Airlift Squadron, stationed at Clark AFB, Philippines and was a Temporary Duty (TDY) augmentee to Detachment 2, 834th Air Division at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam, which controlled all air assets in the country.
