I was in Sturgis, South Dakota, in August and visited the American Veterans Traveling Tribute, a traveling 5/8 scale model Vietnam Veterans Wall that was at the Buffalo Chip camp ground. I frequently visit the various traveling Walls to see my friends' names. We were with C Troop, 2/17th Cav, and we were shot down in a helicopter. 1Lt John F Shiefer was the co-pilot and he and the pilot WO Mark Minear were killed. I survived. From a comrade in arms,

Notes from The Virtual Wall
On 29 Aug 1970 a UH-1H Huey (tail number 67-17699) of C Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, was involved in a Ranger team insertion. As the aircraft settled into the landing zone it was hit repeatedly in the forward section by 12.7mm antiaircraft machinegun and RPG fire. With both pilots dead or dying, the aircraft crashed. Of the eight men aboard, four were injured and recovered by another aircraft but four were dead:
1LT Shiefer was survived by wife Judy L Shiefer and a son of Idaho Street, Boise and his mother Ruth L Shiefer, Noel Street, Boise. He is buried in Dry Creek Cemetery, Boise, Ada County, Idaho.
