James was not long in Vietnam when our squad was hit that day...
He was a good soldier. I will never forget all that were hit that day.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The MACV Summary for 09 April 1970 reflects two engagements in the A Shau Valley about 24 miles west-southwest of Hue:

It is not clear that both engagements involved B Company, 2/501st Infantry but available records do indicate that Bravo 2/501st lost four men killed in action in the A Shau Valley on 09 Apr 1970:
  • SSG James D. Mace, Deseret, UT;
  • CPL Herman A. Clay, Richmond, TX;
  • CPL Leroy Nelson, Theodore, AL; and
  • CPL Charles G. Selman, Farmington, MI.
Others were wounded, and one of those, PFC Thomas L. Gates of Cincinnati, Ohio, died from his wounds sixteen years later - on 25 November 1986. PFC Gates' name was added to the Wall on Veterans' Day 1994.
