At approximately 0530 hours of 12 May 1970, Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized) was suddenly attacked by a unknown size hostile force firing rocket propelled grenades, automatic weapons, and sniper fire. They returned fire with their organic weapons, C&C ship, Night Hawk, and Air Strikes. Companies A and B reacted with A Company taking fire. An Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) from Charlie Company was struck by an enemy recoilless round, knocking the occupants to the ground and injuring four American soldiers beside the vehicle. The volume of fire was extremely heavy, resulting in the award of a Medal of Honor and Silver Star. American losses resulted in 5 deaths on the battlefield and SP4 David F. Johnson who died of wounds (DOW) after being evacuated and admitted to a medical treatment facility. In addition, 44 US wounded, 6 APCs destroyed, and 13 enemy lost their lives. SGT David Francis Johnson was survived by his mother Caroline Glatt Sperle Johnson (1928-2008), step father Clarence P Johnson, and father Martin W Sperle (1923-1996). He was preceded in death by a sister Alice Marie Sperle (1947-1947). He is buried with his mother in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota. - - The Virtual Wall, July 12, 2018
