This is a photo of Michael Lynn Griffith (center) whom I taught to shoot a rifle while he was in the Boy Scouts, never dreaming that he would end in combat in Vietnam. He was killed 6 September 1968 and is on panel 45W Row 051 of the Wall. I am an 81 year old veteran of the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th "Yankee" Division, of Patton's Third Army.

A Note from The Virtual WallOn 5-6 September 1968, seven Companies of the 101st Airborne Division conducted a cordon and search operation to the west of Saigon directed at locating and destroying the 7th VC Local Force Battalion. During the night of 6/7 September 1968 the 7th VC assaulted the Alpha 3/187 position near the hamlet of Ap Tran Dua in Hau Nghia Province. Although Alpha 3/187 held its position against the much larger enemy force, 31 American soldiers died in fierce hand-to-hand combat:
