Private Zody, Sir:

I was in the second grade at Mountain View Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona, at the time we received word of your sacrifice. Your Mother was my First-Grade teacher. (We only knew her as "Mrs. Zody", I don't know her first name). It's been so many years since then, yet your name has never left my mind nor has your Mother's. We all made cards for her but within a year of the terrible news regarding you she drifted out of sight and not quite out of mind. I was at the Wall yesterday and was amazed to find your name. Of course I was sad. Yet elated too. I REMEMBERED YOU!!!! And Your Mother!

The information I obtained told me you had been killed by small arms fire in a place called Kontum, South Vietnam, in a hostile action on the eleventh of May, 1969.

I took a rubbing of your name and I cherish it. I cherished your Mother too (After all, she was my First-Grade Teacher). We flew a flag from the White House over Mtn. View Elementary School and it rained that day. Rained hard. I imagine not only were your Mother's tears raining hard on that grey day, but we kids were crying for you too....

I'm now an Ex Staff-Sergeant, honorably discharged, and I need you to know I think of you and "Mrs. Zody" from time to time and I cried when I found your name.

God Bless You, Sir! AND OF COURSE your Mother too!

Richard ... hello there, brother. My name is Michael Boxer and I served with you in D Company 3/8th 4th Infantry Division from October 1968 thru October 1969.

I received an email from Ami Heisler whose father served with you and you were his best friend, asking me for information if I knew anything about you. I have forwarded her email to our brothers whom I have been in contact with hoping possibly one of them has some information for Ami.

I am sorry to say that I do not remember you, since it was many years ago. Maybe information from our brothers may assist me also in remembering you. Forgive me it has been so many years. May you rest in peace.

Ami's request to me was as follows:

I sent you a message at the Vietnam war records. If you have any info about a Richard Zody KIA May 11, 1969. He was my father's best friend. He was from Arizona and they both went to Nam together. His tour was from Nov 22,1968 till KIA. If you have any information please email me. And especially if you know of any other way to contact other people. My dad doesn't talk about Nam so I don't know anything about him. How can I find out if someone might be looking for him?

Thank you so much for your time and God bless.

Sincerely,
Ami Heisler
