Ed, 23 April 1967 was a sad day - the 129th lost you and Michael Walker in a crash of your helicopter. Know that we think of you often, and that we will especially remember you at every re-union by lighting a candle and having a moment of silence in your honor. Rest in Peace, Ed.


 

Notes from The Virtual Wall

On 23 April 1967 a UH-1D (tail number 64-13525) of the 129th AHC struck trees while lifting off from a confined area. The aircraft crashed and burned, killing four of the eight men aboard:
  • 129th AHC crewmen:
    • WO1 Edward William Wells, pilot, died
    • WO1 H. D. Sauer, pilot, survived
    • SP4 W. D. James, crew chief, survived
    • SP4 Michael D. Walker, gunner, died of injuries 10 May 67

  • Passengers from C Company, 2/327th Infantry:
    • 1st Sgt Raymond E. Benson, died
    • SSgt J. Plummer, survived
    • Sp4 W. E. Hutchins, survived
    • PFC Frederick C. Schmidt, died
