Stevie was my cousin, the second of eight children of Stan and Mildred Surma, who ran a dairy farm southwest of Waubay, South Dakota. Before his parents died, I told them about The Virtual Wall, that it seemed fitting to me that Stevie should be remembered on it, and asked them what should be said. His father turned to me with pride and said, "Tell them that he was a farmer." To Stan, that summarized it all: Stevie and his family brought food to the world. And the world was poorer for his loss.

Steven was my brother. I was about 11 years old when he was killed. I remember when he was home for Christmas we all had our family picture taken. Steven had his uniform on as he proudly displayed the fact that he was in the army. When Steve was killed, I was at school in Sioux Falls when I learned I was going home. It was strange because it was in the middle of the week. My parents told me when I arrived in Watertown on the bus. I remember the exact words my mother said when I asked why they sent for me. "Our poor Stevie was killed" she said, her voice breaking with emotion and tears. I looked over at my Dad and it was the first time I saw my Dad in tears. We all loved this man and missed him throughout the years. I don't remember much about him but I do remember a gentleness about him, that he liked to fish and hunt and yes as my Dad said, he was a farmer!!! We will never forget him!!
