Ralph Mack Smith was a country boy from Colorado City, Texas. He grew up in a small agricultural-oil field town. He loved to work on his father's and grandfather's land; farming, riding horses, hunting and fishing. He loved the outdoors. He was a 1966 graduate of Colorado City High School. He was drafted in the spring of 1969 and was trained in infantry. He was killed six weeks after beginning his tour in Vietnam. He received a posthumous promotion to corporal and two Bronze Star Medals, one for valor and one for meritorious service. He was buried in the Handley Cemetery in Mitchell County. The cemetery is nine miles northwest of Colorado City, Texas. He is remembered by his community, his family and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.
