Notes from The Virtual WallOn 21 September 1969 Fire Support Base Russell, northwest of the Rockpile and just south of the DMZ, was being shut down. The fortifications and excess munitions were being prepared for destruction in place when an accidental explosion killed four men and wounded fifteen others. The four dead included LCpl Leonel M. Silveira, Pfc Grover Bowen , and two Vietnamese scouts. One of the wounded, Pfc James W. Jackson , was evacuated with the other wounded to the US military hospital at Quang Tri City - where he simply and inexplicably disappeared.
