22 Dec 2005 Chuck, as his friends knew him, was a guntruck driver and gunner. While in Vietnam, he was assigned to a guntruck named "Corp's Revenge". His NCO, James Brunell, stated Chuck was the best driver and gunner he ever had in his year tour in Vietnam. Chuck was reliable and had a sixth sense about what to do in all situations. Chuck had ties to Midland, Texas and he is listed on the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial located in Midland, Texas. Chuck died from his wounds the day following an event in which his truck was operating in a convoy and the truck was hit by a rocket in a ambush. 23 Dec 2005 Chuck was one of those special people that you could stake your life on. Honest, upfront, and the type of guy that everyone liked. To me he was one of my closest friends. He served as my gunner and driver on our "CORPS REVENGE" guntruck for nearly 5 months. We shared many experiences, and became almost like brothers. I could say more, but want to end with this ... A Note from The Virtual Wall At least two men from the 54th Transportation Battalion died as a result of the 13 June 1969 convoy ambush. PVT James C. Story of Berwyn, Illinois, from the 5th Trans Company, was driving a 2-1/2 ton truck with a load of munitions. The munitions cargo detonated when the truck was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, reducing the truck to scattered debris. Private Story's remains could not be recovered. As noted above, SP4 James E. Pulley of the 523rd Trans Company was wounded in the ambush and died the following day.
