The 12th casualty of an area man serving in Viet Nam is reported today with the death of Sp4 Daniel D. (Danny) Prince, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Prince, 6324 Devonshire Dr., Oxford.
The Prince family received word of their son's death Monday night from the Department of Defense, Washington, D.C. Earlier the department had notified the family that Specialist Prince was missing in action. The death of Prince is the first for the immediate Oxford area in Viet Nam.
Suffers Wounds
The soldier had entered the Army in June of 1965, immediately after graduation from Talawanda High School in Oxford. He had been wounded in February, then hospitalized and returned to action.
"Danny's luck just ran out," said Mrs. Prince Tuesday morning. She had high praise for the defense department and its constant communication with her and her husband, starting with the news that he was missing in action. When his death on August 2 was verified, the department immediately got in touch with the parents who were in Boulder, Colo., at the time.
"I'm pretty proud of our country," said Mrs. Prince. "And Danny was proud of his country, too. When he was graduated from Talawanda he said he realized he was giving up a lot of things to go to Viet Nam but that was what he wanted to do. He said he had everything to live for. In all of his letters to us he never complained."
Officer School
She said Danny was rated second best soldier in his battalion at Fort Knox, Ky., and that he was offered the chance to go to Officers Candidate School but that he declined because he knew it would delay his arrival at the scene of action.
Danny entered Talawanda as a junior and tried out for football but failed to make the first team because other members of the squad had the advantage of knowing the system of play. He had to be content with sitting on the bench most of the time. He liked skiing and tennis.
Mr. Prince, a professor at Maimi University, is chairman of the Systems Analysis Department at the university. The family moved to Oxford from Galion, Ohio, three years ago.
The body of Specialist Prince is en route to California. Services are pending in St. Paul, Nebr., where the youth was born on Christmas Day 1946. He leaves his pareents and a sister, Cindy Lou, 17, a Talawanda High School student.
