Howard Phillips was a friend as well as my Platoon Leader. I was with him when he died in LZ Bird near Bong Son, RVN, on 31 JAN 1966. A sniper fired a round that penetrated his chest causing instant death. We were in a UH-1D "Huey" Helicopter approximately 30 feet above the ground at a very slow airspeed, preparing to land. Howard was at the controls when he was shot and I landed the "Huey" immediately.

I still miss him after nearly 35 years and think of him a lot. My son, Howard Timothy Woodruff, age 31, is named after this great man.

Howard was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat during the Korean Conflict at the age of seventeen.
