20 Feb 2007 Jimmy, when I was a very little girl, you were my hero. You were my big brother, the soldier that volunteered for Viet Nam to protect our country. Now, 40 years later, you are still my hero. You gave your all to protect this nation and now I understand why you did it. Just like your Native American ancestors, you fought the brave fight trying to save your commanding officer, Springer, as well as Elzie Sanders and Greg Goslin. None of you four made it home alive. Your name will be repeated to the children of our family, so that they may take pride in their warrior ancestor and so they will live forever knowing how you honored not just our family, but our Hopi, Ute and Apache nations. You will live forever in my heart and I will burn the sage for you every year on the anniversary of your leaving this world. I will see you in my dreams. 02 Jun 2007 Staff Sergeant Ortiz: I had the honor this past Memorial Day to escort your sister Didi to the Wall for her first visit. It was quite an emotional time for her, as it is for all who go there. She was pleased when we invited her to carry the Wolfhound wreath to the Wall as a special tribute to all you Hounds who made the supreme sacrifice. It was obvious to me how much your sister loved you, and honored your service. I think her visit to the Wall was something she looked forward to doing, and felt the great peace that comes from being in the presence of you heroes who died serving your country. Although I didn't know you, we Wolfhounds have a bond that only those who have served will truly understand. Rest in peace, my brother. A Note from The Virtual Wall Bravo 2/27 Infantry lost four men on 12 November 1967: CPT Charles A. Springer, Memphis, TN (Dist Svc Cross); SSG Jacob Ortiz, Denver, CO (Silver Star); SP4 Gregg M. Goslin, Spooner, WI; and SP4 Elzie Sanders, Smiths Grove, KY. The Citation to Captain Springer's Distinguished Service Cross gives an idea of the circumstances.
