SGT Richard Lee Moss died from fragment wounds received while on a combat operation when he was hit by fragments from a hostile mortar round. Son of John David Moss and Susan Shelnutt "Betty" Moss (-- - 2001). Richard's paternal grandparents were R.L. Moss of Athens, Georgia, and Ann Cubbege Moss of Macon. Maternal grandparents were Harold Lee Shelnutt and Eileen Harper Shelnutt, of Athens. Raised in a military family, SGT Moss traveled widely as a child. During World War II, his mother Susan worked as a secretary in the War Department in Washington, D.C. He was survived by his parents, then living in Dayton, Ohio, and older brother John David Moss (1943 - 2013) who also served the United States in the Air Force, including Southeast Asia. He also was survived by a sister Kelly and brother Jeffrey L. Moss. Richard, and his mother and father are buried in Shiloh Park Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio. - - The Virtual Wall, August 8, 2014
