7 Jan 2002 Mike was born March 12, 1945 in New York, New York. He considered himself a Tucsonan because the Miller family moved to Tucson, Arizona from Nutley, New Jersey in 1955. Mike's love for flying began at an early age. He rose in the ranks as a Civil Air Patrol Cadet and was awarded a flight scholarship. At age 17, Mike had earned his private pilot's license and flew at any opportunity. He graduated from Rincon High School in 1963. Mike graduated from the University of Arizona in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Political Science. During his four years at the U of A, he was active in Air Force ROTC where he was a member of Silver Wing and Arnold Air Society. Mike proudly received his commission as an Air Force Second Lieutenant May 1967 and was assigned to navigator training at Mather Air Force Base, California. Upon completing Nav School, he was stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson to train as a Weapons Systems Operator in the F-4D Phantom fighter. On February 28, 1969, Mike left the United States for the last time for Da Nang Air Base. One month to the day later and 16 days after his 24th birthday, he was missing-in-action. The F-4 Mike was in crashed near the DMZ in Quang Tri Province while on a mission flown at low altitude in the haze. His body still has not been recovered. 03 Sep 2007 I was on a town pass during my 6 week long basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas in Oct 1989. My training buddies and I stumbled upon a POW/MIA museum in downtown San Antonio. At 20, I was fairly ignorant to their personal sacrifices until I read and saw everything that museum had to offer. At the exit was a display of POW/MIA bracelets. We couldn't pull out our first active duty pay quick enough. I wasn't picky about who I wore on my wrist other than I wanted him to be in the same Air Force as I. 1Lt Michael A. Miller, USAF, 28 Mar 69, SVN, AZ. I was proud and never forgot those engraved words. 17 1/2 years later, I found my bracelet in a jewerly box and decided to research it, which led me to this site. I finally have a face and facts with the name I've worn on my wrist for years and will continue to wear it. I will retire from the USAF in a few years and will be wearing this bracelet then, unless Michael is found. Then it will be returned to his family. A Note from The Virtual Wall On 28 March 1969, Major Robert A. Belcher, pilot, and 1st Lt Michael A. Miller, weapons system operator, were flying in F-4D 66-8764 as one of two Phantoms tasked against a mortar site and bunker complex near Bo Ho Su in the DMZ buffer zone in Quang Tri Province. While working the target their aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed before either crewman could eject. Both Belcher and Miller were listed as Killed in Action. As of 28 Oct 2003 their remains have not been repatriated.
