I smoked my first cigarette ever with Buddy in the basement boys' bathroom of Byram Township Elementary School many years ago. We were never really close friends, but were friends none the less. We also played baseball together. There is an ironic twist to that fact, along with another friend and fellow paratrooper, Freddy Love , whose memorial was recently posted here. All three of us played baseball together at one time or another. In Little League, Freddy was playing first base, and caught the final out of the first no-hitter I ever pitched. Here is the ironic twist. Buddy caught the final out of the LAST no-hitter (a perfect game, no less) I pitched. It took me almost 35 years to realize that fact, and to this day I thank them both, not only for what they did for me, but the sacrifice they made for "duty, honor, and country". Buddy, I miss you every day of my life, and some day, we will see each other again. Rest easy, my friend, the great divide is all that keeps us apart. All gave some, you gave all. "Ten hut, hand salute, Taps." |
