I served with First Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, at Bien Hoa, June 65 - June 66. CWO W J La Grand lost his life on 5 Sep 1965, the day I turned 21. I share my life with him.

I visited William La Grand's mother, brother and sisters in Portland OR in 1993 while in the US to attend a 173rd Airborne reunion and showed them his bracelet that I wear, that I got at the Wall in 1990. I wanted the bracelet of someone killed in action in 1965 when I was in country. I found his.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

CWO2 La Grand was a helicopter pilot with the 197th Aviation Company, 145th Aviation Battalion. On 05 Sep 1965, he was a passenger in an A-1G Skyraider ("Spad") aircraft piloted by Capt. Richard C. Marshall, USAF. Following departure from Bien Hoa, the aircraft was seen to crash. The area in which the aircraft went down was under hostile control at the time, and recovery and excavation attempts were thwarted by heavy enemy activity in the area and hostile presence. Both La Grand and Marshall were declared missing in action. One year later, their status was changed to "Died while Missing".

Their remains have not been recovered.
