SP4 ROBERT KROPTAVICH

 

During the Vietnam War there was no overriding reason to keep close track of names of the men and women who died as a result of military service in the war zone. A decade after the withdrawal of US forces, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was approved for construction. The service branches went back through their records to identify our dead by name. Inevitably some men who should have been named on the "Wall" were not. Over the years additional names have been inscribed on the Wall - some were men who died after the war as a result of wounds received in the war, and others were men whose names were overlooked in earlier years. A 2007 local newspaper article, for 40 Years Ago (1967) noted the following: Pvt. Robert Kroptavich, 1961 Tunkhannock High School grad, recently entered the U.S. Army and has been assigned to Fort Jackson, S.C. for training. Eventually, Robert was assigned to Vietnam starting on 21 July 1967. On the 21st of May 1968, a month before his tour in Vietnam was complete, he was placed on the very seriously ill list at the 12th Evacuation Hospital at Cu Chi, Vietnam, the day after he was admitted. He was returned to the states where he was diagnosed with Leukemia. He was admitted to Valley Forge General Hospital at Phoenixville, Pennsylvania where he passed on September 10, 1968. His father, Joseph Kroptavich passed away October 27, 1983 and his mother Ann G Kroptavich, 83, of Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Tyler Memorial Hospital. Born July 19, 1922, in Dickson City, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Stella Liebarski Azarsky. She was survived by three sons, Joseph Jr., Daniel and David, and daughter, Rose Ann Coviello, all of Tunkhannock. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert, in 1968, from injuries he received in Viet Nam, where he received two Purple Hearts. Robert's brother, Joseph Jr, at age 66, of Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at Tyler Memorial Hospital. He was survived by two brothers, Daniel and David; and sister, Rose Ann Coviello, all of Tunkhannock. Robert and his parents are buried in Pieta Catholic Cemtery, Tunkhannock,
