SSG AARON HARTNESS

 

17 Mar 2006 Aaron was from the small town of Fluvanna, Texas, which is north of Snyder, Texas in Scurry County, Texas. It's almost a ghost town now. Aaron attended schools in Fluvanna and was among the last students to attend before the school was closed down and the kids were bused to Snyder to attend school. Aaron was married and the father of a son. He enlisted in the Army in 1957 at age 19 and was in his third enlistment when he was killed when a land mine destroyed his APC. He is buried in his home town of Fluvanna, Texas. He is remembered by Scurry County and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial located in Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice not be forgotten. A Note from The Virtual Wall The casualty files show that "A" Troop, 1/1 Cavalry, had three men killed by a mine or mines on 07 May 1968: SSG Aaron Hartness, Fluvanne, TX; SGT Roger D. Cauley, Owensboro, KY; and SP4 Alonso Aragon, San Jose, CA. However, the casualty files also say that SSG Hartness died in Quang Nam Province, SGT Cauley in Quang Tin Province, and SP4 Aragon in Quang Tri Province - unlikely at best. The bottom line is that The Virtual Wall cannot determine from the casualty records where "A" Troop was on 07 May 1968. The unit was based out of Danang in the spring of 1968, so Quang Nam Province seems most likely - but it isn't proven.
