A Note from The Virtual Wall The 355th Tactical Fighter Wing moved from McConnell AFB in Kansas to Takhli RTAFB in Thailand in early November 1965. One of its squadrons, the 469th TFS, was assigned to Korat RTAFB, closing on 15 November and flying its first combat sorties on 16 November. One mission on 16 Nov consisted of a flight of F-105s conducting armed reconnaissance in northeastern North Vietnam, between Hanoi and the sea. Captain Green, in F-105D tail number 62-4332, was hit by fragments from a near-miss by an SA-2 Guideline missile detonation. He managed to fly his aircraft some 40 miles over water, hoping to make it to Danang or to eject near a US warship. Instead, he was killed when the aircraft crashed in the Gulf of Tonkin. His body was not recovered.
