The 1st and 5th Battalions of the 46th Infantry were ORGANIC/ASSIGNED to the 23rd Infantry Division but ATTACHED/OPCON to the 196th and 198th Brigades, respectively, during the period 15 February 1969 to 1 November 1971, therefore, the brigade shoulder patches do not show in medals box above. For most of the time the 46th Infantry was in Vietnam, 1st Battalion was OPCON to 196th and 5th Battalion was OPCON to 198th. Read 46th Infantry Vietnam assignment history here.

There are signs on each side of the bridge across the street from his childhood home;
it has been dedicated by the State of West Virginia and is named the
"Robert Onnie Goodman Jr. Memorial Bridge"
His family worked diligently to get that bridge dedicated and it's an honor.

PFC Robert O Goodman Jr, was shot as he moved to a guard post when he was mistaken for a hostile force and fired upon by a friendly force.
Robert, Jr was the son of Francis "Goldie" Glandon Goodman (1916-1982) and Robert "Bud" Onnie Goodman, Sr (1916-1973). He had 9 sisters, Virgie (Gus) (1934-1998), Deloris Jean (1937-1980), Bonnie, Linda Lou (1942-2010), Ruth, Lucille, Cathy, Belinda, Phyllis, as well as 4 'brothers', Thomas E., Jimmy Dale, Ronnie 'Pooh", and Jerry Michael McNeely.
Robert had been in Vietnam for about 6 weeks when he was accidently killed. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Gilbert (Mingo County),
West Virginia, as are his parents and two sisters.

Requesting
The Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the bridge crossing the Guyandotte River on State Route 80 at Tamcliff in Mingo County, West Virginia, the "Robert O. Goodman, Jr., Memorial Bridge."
Whereas,
Private First Class Robert O. Goodman, Jr., was born August 21, 1951, at Christian, West Virginia, the son of Robert
Onnie Goodman, Sr. and Goldie Frances Glandon Goodman, both deceased, who had a total of twelve children, namely Robert O.
Goodman, Jr., Virgie Goodman Bailey, Delores Goodman Lawrence, Bonnie Goodman Baldridge, Linda Goodman Huff, Ruth Goodman Myer,
Lucille Goodman Grimmett, Cathy Goodman Allen, Belinda Goodman Brown, Phyllis Goodman Johnson, Thomas Goodman and Jimmy Goodman;
and
Whereas,
Robert O. Goodman, Jr. resided at and was educated in Tamcliff, West Virginia, during his youth and died in service to his country in the United States Army on October 3, 1971, as the result of a gunshot to the head fired by another soldier near the mountain of Nui Son Ga, approximately 20 miles northwest of Hoi An City, in Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam; he was buried at the Hollywood Cemetery at Gilbert, West Virginia; and
Whereas,
The State of West Virginia is privileged to be the home State of Private First Class Robert O. Goodman, Jr., who was
admired and respected by all of the members of the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, 23d Infantry Division who knew and served with him; and
Whereas,
Private First Class Robert O. Goodman, Jr., a young soldier, not yet twenty-one years of age, made the supreme sacrifice in the military service of his country; he was awarded, among other medals, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star; and his life and dedication of service and devotion to his country and state and sacrifice should not go unnoticed; and
Whereas,
It is altogether fitting that Robert O. Goodman, Jr. be memorialized for service to his state and country and giving his
life for his country; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Highways is hereby requested to name the bridge crossing the Guyandotte River on State Route 80 at Tamcliff in Mingo County, West Virginia, the "Robert O. Goodman, Jr., Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved,
That the commissioner is requested to have made and be placed at both ends of the bridge, signs identifying the bridge as the "Robert O. Goodman, Jr., Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved,
That the Clerk of the House is hereby directed to forward a copy of this concurrent resolution to the Secretary of Transportation, the Commissioner of the Division of Highways, the Director of the Division of Veteran's Affairs and to the surviving brothers and sisters of Robert O. Goodman, Jr.
