A Note from The Virtual Wall On 30 January 1968 the VC's TET Offensive began, in some places prematurely. The 4th Infantry Division was then stationed in Kontum and Pleiku Provinces in the Central Highlands. The Division lost ten men as a result of the first day's fighting around Kontum City: B Trp, 7th Sqdn, 17th Cavalry SGT Steven C. Powers, Compton, CA A Trp, 2nd Sqdn, 1st Cavalry SP5 Dennis B. Kouhns, Ogden, IA SP4 Glenn R. Brust, Troy, NY SP4 Robert W. Forkl, Holland, NY SP4 Louis C. Grove, Clifton, NJ SP4 Richard F. Rial, Rathbone, NY PFC Paul E. Gerlach, Madison, WI 1st Bn, 69th Armor SP5 Henry W. Hartman, San Angelo, TX, B Co (DoW 01/31/1968) SGT Richard T. Heimes, Yankton, SD, A Co SP4 Pete Melnick, Yatesboro, PA, A Co By the time Kontum City was declared secure on 08 Feb, 33 Americans had been killed in the fighting.
