During the Vietnam War there was no overriding reason to keep close track of names of the men and women who died as a result of military service in the war zone. A decade after the withdrawal of US forces, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was approved for construction. The service branches went back through their records to identify our dead by name. Inevitably some men who should have been named on the "Wall" were not. Over the years additional names have been inscribed on the Wall - some were men who died after the war as a result of wounds received in the war, and others were men whose names were overlooked in earlier years. The Department of Defense approved having his name etched on the Wall during May 2014, along with 13 other names. SP5 Faherty was born in Galway Ireland on 30 December 1946. He went into the United States Army in Boston while living in Marlboro, Massachusetts April 20, 1966 to take his basic training at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He remained there to take his Advanced Individual Training in Motion Picture Photography in the School Brigade from 28 July until 19 December 1966 when he took leave before going to Vietnam. He arrived in Vietnam 4 Feb 1967 and was assigned to Headquarters Company, United States Army, Vietnam. He went home on a compasionate leave to be with his widowed mother and shortly after his arrival home, he was diagnosed with malaria. He died as a result of cerebral malaria and blackwater fever on 25 July 1968. He is buried in Rahoon Cemetery, Galway City, Ireland. |
