Paul and I went through basic training together at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Lewis, Washington; and were assigned to Vietnam together to the 1st Infantry Division - the "Bloody Red One", as Paul called it. Paul was a mechanized driver near An Loc while I was infantry near Lai Khe. In basic training, I was our platoon's leader and Paul was one of my squad leaders. One night we put a rival platoon sergeant's VW car up on the curb - for which we were both busted and placed on "hard labor". That is when I realized what Paul already knew - that the Army was a "joke" and you might as well enjoy it! When we were in the Big Red One reception center in Vietnam, Paul found a "pet" mouse which he carried with him everywhere - the men would crack up in formations when Paul's mouse would come crawling out on his shoulder - the platoon leader never could figure what everyone was laughing at. We were going to take our R&R together in July 1969, but Paul was killed in June. Paul really liked the Army game, even though he was drafted. He taught me to enjoy every day because you never know when your time will be up - and PS: Don't get caught up on how important you are.
