On this Memorial Day, May 29, 2006 the memories linger on of Sergeant Dunlap, my husband, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1963. His two sons and I still miss him and wish we could have grown old together. Thanks for allowing me to post another memorial on this Memorial day. |

At the request of his wife, Betty Dunlap Allee, the below information and photos have been posted in order to tell his story of service, honor, and sacrifice to his family, friends and country. Born in 1933 in Blairsville Pennsylvania, the son of Thelma Welsh and Malcolm Edwin Dunlap, he grew up in Torrance, Pennsylvania. He married Betty Jo McMillan. According to his son Thomas (Tommy): Our Dunlap furniture family has a proud military background. My father, Wilbur Truby Dunlap, enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 18. I was born while we were stationed in Munich, Germany.
We then received orders to relocate to Ft. Gordon, Georgia and then on to Ft. Bragg, N.C. My father received orders to South Vietnam in June 1963.
He was KIA while serving with the Military Assistance Group Forces as an advisor in October 1963. The News and Observer, Raleigh, NC
17 Oct 1963, Thursday, Page 23 Our family stayed in Fayetteville/Ft. Bragg area where my mom met and married Master Sergeant James Franklin Allee. James is a Korean and Vietnam war veteran. My son, Thomas T. Dunlap, has followed in their footsteps by also joining the U.S. Army. He has served one tour in Afghanistan and is currently stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Our Dunlap family also has countless family members who have served or are currently serving that we have not named. We are proud to be a part of this family's military heritage." From son, Thomas Dunlap. On October 15, 2000, Betty wrote the following, only one of many she posted on another site: Memories Live On - 37th years ago today
On this day, October 15, 2000, memory is still very real of the day the Military car stopped in front of my house. Two uniformed officers met me with the news of my husband's death, Sgt. Wilbur T. Dunlap, killed in Vietnam while on a training mission, compass run, as I was told, training Vietamese soldiers, and he met with snipers that afternoon and I was told he was killed instantly. At that time he was a husband, and father of two sons, ages 7 & 8. Now those sons have families of their own and has blessed me with two fine grandsons. We wish he could be here with us to enjoy the grandsons as one has just graduated from high school and the other one will graduate in 2001. We have many fine memories of this fine soldier who died doing what he felt was his duty to defend his country. Time goes on and memories remain. We will always miss him. We will meet him again in Heaven. Love Betty. The Herald-Sun, Durham, North Carolina, 25 Oct 1963, Friday, Page 2 and
