Richard served on the aircraft carrier, USS Forrestal and died off North Vietnam as a non-hostile sea casualty on the day of a serious accident leading to a conflagration that killed 134 personnel. You can read more about the USS Forrestal fire here.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Despard was listed as died while missing at sea. He may have been recovered and buried at Rosehill Cemetery, Manson, Iowa or it may be an 'In Memory of' marker. It is unknown at this time who survived him.
