To the Craigmyle Family . . . . and my buddy Floyd. I served with Floyd in 1969 in Pleiku, the Central Highlands of RSVN. He was my best buddy and called me 'Pineapple' because of my homeland, Hawaii. I called him 'Farmer' coming from the countryside of Lyons, Oregon. We shared a lot about our hometowns. Often we would double up on guard duty (when only one person was required) on top of our 4.2.inch Mortar Armored Personnel Carrier just to keep company. Our unit, the Weapons Platoon, 2nd Bn, 8th Mechanized Inf, was primarily there for indirect fire support for our ground infantry platoons. We were nicknamed the 'the Panthers' and also guarded a water supply depot outside LZ Blackhawk between Quin Nhon and Kontum City. I remember the morning you left the Support Engineers compound (Wooly Bully) to go to base camp Enari with 'Rags', Sgt. William Roeglin from Wisconsin, and 'Misfire', our weapons platoon mascot dog. A short-timer, 'Rags' was going in to prepare to go back to 'the world'. You were going to the PX at basecamp and also bring back the platoon's mailbag. I had bid you a fond Aloha as you left and was greatly saddened at the news that you folks engaged in a firefight along the way to basecamp and were fatally wounded. To this day I remember your short stature as a soldier, but as my buddy, I will always remember your kind heart. Every now and then I think of the months spent in the Republic of South Vietnam. . . and most importantly, I am reminded of the great times we had.
Aloha my friend, my buddy, me ke aloha pumehana, |
