Michael was my cousin. I want to salute him for his bravery and service. Beyond that I want to send him my everlasting love and to let him know that we will never forget him. God watch over him and keep him until that day comes when we can all meet again in eternal love and peace.

When my father died in 1968 your Mother Olga came to the funeral and cried in my Mother's arms because she said I looked so much like Michael that it broke her heart. I was born on September 15, 1940 just a short time before Michael.

Always in my mind and heart.

From a cousin,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On November 4, 1/35 Infantry was under the operational control of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division and had moved north to LZ Baldy near Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, 1st Corps Tactical Zone. Contact with elements of the 2nd NVA Division was constant and sharp. On November 14, the battalion command group (CO, S-3, and LNO's) made an early morning liftoff in the C&C helicopter to check in with A Company, located about 15 kilometers SW of Baldy. After heavy contact the day before, things were pretty quiet on the ground but when the command chopper showed up a 12.7mm machine gun took it under intense fire and brought it down. A Company troopers rushed to the scene but there were no survivors.

The C&C helicopter was from C Company, 227th AHB, 1st Cav Division (UH-1D, hull number 66-01006). The following men died in the crash:

  • From the 1/35 Command Group:
    • LTC Robert Kimmel, Commanding Officer, 1/35 Inf
    • MAJ Gerard M. Wynn, S-3 (Operations Officer), 1/35 Inf
    • CPT Michael Casp, 2/9 Arty, artillery liaison
    • 1LT Randy Shaffer, HHC 1/35 Inf

  • From C Company, 227th AHB:
    • WO1 Frank A Murrietta, pilot
    • WO Stephen H. Thornton, copilot
    • SP5 Paul E Johnson, crew chief and gunner
    • PFC Russell F. McLaughlin, gunner
