The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

Boyle won many medals while on city Recreation Department swim teams. He planned to become a commerical artist, but when he enlisted in the Army in September 1967, his goal was to become an officer. He qualified for Officer Candidate School just before his death. The 19-year-old sergeant died in Nui Ba Den, Viet Nam, on December 30, 1968. He was survived by his mother and stepfather, four brothers and a sister.

I probably knew Jim better than anyone in the 4/23, since he was one of our squad leaders in AIT at Fort Lewis, and Jim was only with our battalion for a short time. He was a real feisty young sergeant. You just couldn't find a nicer guy. He was killed at Fire Support Base Bragg by an incoming mortar. FSB Bragg was just a short distance to the southeast of The Black Virgin Mountain in Tay Ninh Province.
