A note from The Virtual WallTwo A-1E Skyraiders from the 1st Air Commando Squadron detachment at Pleiku AB were conducting a "Steel Tiger" mission in southern Laos near Ban Pakha. As the flight lead, Major Armstrong in A-1E tail number 52-132663, rolled in to deliver his weapons, his aircraft was hit by 12.7mm antiaircraft fire. The Skyraider rolled inverted and crashed. His wingman did not see Major Armstrong leave the aircraft, and no emergency radio signals or other signs of Armstong's survival were found.Major Frank Armstrong was declared "Killed in Action". His remains have not been repatriated. |
