Steve was born and spent most his early years in Abilene. He was born to Betty Peterson and Donal V. Allison. His parents divorced and he assumed his stepfather's last name of Lantz, which he used in school. He attended Abilene schools and then completed his senior year at Big Spring High School in Big Spring, Texas using the last name of Lantz and graduated in May 1967. His wife's name was Helen.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army as soon as he graduated and resumed using his legal name of Allison. He completed training as a medic. He was assigned as a medic with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry. He was killed in action on June 9, 1968, 9 months after beginning his year-long tour. Steve's decorations include the Combat Medic Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He was buried with full military honors in the Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Abilene, Texas. He is remembered by his friends, by the Big Spring Vietnam Memorial and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.
