17 Apr 2007 Kenneth, you were only with 3rd Plt, B Co, 2/28th Infantry for a short period of time before you transferred to Special Forces. You were there long enough for the guys who served with you to know you were a great person and a very good Black Lion. After 40 years it is time to pay tribute to you. The day we heard of your death after going to SFs was a sad day at Bravo 3. May God bless you and your family. If any of your family sees this memorial I hope they will contact me. A Note from The Virtual Wall In April 1966 the 1st Infantry Division formed the first of several Long Range Reconnaissance detachments. As developed, the units had two officers - the commander and an XO/operations officer - and fielded six teams of five men each. The first LRRP detachment was assigned to Troop D, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry for support. Manpower was drawn from the existing pool of combat-experienced soldiers and from highly motivated new-comers. In time, the provisional LRRP units grew into solidly entrenched assets for US Army Vietnam, and eventually were replaced by fully-fledged units such as E Company, 20th Infantry. In February 1969 these units were themselves reorganized as lettered companies of the 75th Infantry (Rangers). According to Shelby Stanton's "Vietnam Order of Battle", on 01 Aug 1967 the 5th Special Forces Group established Detachment B-36 ("Project RAPID FIRE") as II Field Force's strategic and tactical reconnaissance force. The Special Forces Association says that Sergeant Tate was killed while working with a Det B-36 unit operating just inside Binh Duong Province about 5 kilometers north-northwest of Dau Tieng.
