He is our brother THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY WASHINGTON The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL posthumously to PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ROBERT E. STRAHM UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as an Automatic Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines in Vietnam on 17 November 1966. During a battalion search and destroy mission conducted jointly with Army of Vietnam forces in the Mai Loc area of Quang Tri Province, Private First Class Strahm's platoon was taken under intense small arms and heavy automatic weapons fire. Seeing three of his comrades felled by enemy fire from a fortified position, he maneuvered to a position where he could direct fire at the enemy. With complete disregard for his own safety, he advanced on the position, firing his automatic rifle and laying down protection for the wounded, thereby enabling a corpsman to safely reach the fallen Marines. Wounded almost immediately by enemy fire, he continued to pour devastating fire into their position. His outstanding valor, daring initiative and indomitable fighting spirit served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
