It has been 40 years since I wrote and signed a letter of condolence to the parents of Jerry Steed. I was his commanding officer when he was killed Jun 24, 1967 during a mortar attack on our position. It was about 1:00 AM when the rounds began to fall and our position came under attack. Powder was ignited, artillery rounds exploded, and the pungent smell of gunpowder filled the air. One of our howitzers caught fire. I awoke and went towards the perimeter, fearing a ground attack. That did not happen. In addition to Jerry's fatal wounds, many members of the unit were wounded during the attack. Jerry had not been assigned to us very long, having transferred to us under what was called the "infusion program". He was a good soldier and a hero who died too young. I am very happy to have come across this website and am pround to have added to it for all that knew my brother in arms, Specialist Jerry L. Steed. May God rest his soul...
