A Note from The Virtual WallOn 11 Sep 1968 Companies A and C of the 1st Bn, 5th Infantry, were in night defensive positions in the vicinity of the Ben Cui airstrip, with A Co about 300 meters west of the airstrip and C Co about a kilometer southeast of A Co. At about 0430 an enemy force attacked first A Company and an hour later C Company as well. Two additional companies - B/1/5 Infantry and A/3/22 Infantry - were inserted by air and the combined force began a sweep of the area. Intelligence estimates based on the enemy bodies and gear left on the battlefields suggested that the early morning attacks on A and C Companies had been mounted by a battalion-sized force. Three Americans were killed and 20 others wounded in the action. The three dead were from A Company, 1/5 Infantry:
