A Note from The Virtual Wall At about 1300 on the afternoon of 05 June 1969, A and C Companies of the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, engaged a large enemy force in fortified positions northwest of Trung Lap. Supporting fires, both artillery and air, were called in to reduce the fortifications, but one Huey gunship was shot down and three armored personnel carriers were destroyed in the fighting. By day's end, six men from the 5th Infantry and four men from the Huey were dead: 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry 2LT James D. Walker, Santa Maria, CA, A Company SGT Charles M. Mardis, Vandenberg AFB, CA, C Company UH-1C tail number 66-00552, 116th Assault Helicopter Company 1LT Jimmy W. Crisp, Menard, TX WO Richard J. Holman, Astoria, OR SP4 Ronald R. Baker, Concord, CA SP4 Steven W. Herring, Freedom, CA Visit John Dennison's Medics on the Wall memorial which honors the Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who died in Vietnam.
