Stanley Miller was the first person I ever knew who died in war. He was a few years ahead of me in Blessed Sacrament School. I was in class with his younger brother, Michael.

Their sister Dorothy was friends with my sister, Cecilia. Both of them danced together at Jane Cotter's. The family lived next door to my cousins, the Cadigans - on Monroe Avenue. Top of the Eight hundred block, even numbered side. The Miller family had the second floor.

Their father, Stanley Sr., had been in the Bataan Death March. As an American, he was on the losing side - from 1942 until his eventual release. His frame was still thin and he always seemed ready for another blow to fall. But he was great to us kids - happy to have gotten a second chance after being a POW.

Stanley being killed in Vietnam took the father too. And then the mother. It was sad but unstoppable.
