My Uncle, Sgt. Ronnie T. Mathis, was mother's brother. Ronnie was killed en route to Landing Zone Albany from Landing Zone X-Ray when Alpha Company was ambushed. He was a wonderful Uncle who will never be forgotten.

26 Dec 2003 It has been such an honor to have become acquainted with friends, comrades and leaders who served with Ronnie. Many still suffer from the horrors of Vietnam 1965 and I have written a poem about the survivors, those who fought in a far away land and those who battled the loss of their loved one. It was my honor to have known Ronnie. He was a fine young man and it's no surprise to learn that he was also a hero who paid the ultimate price for his country. His legacy of courage will never be forgotten and I appreciate this opportunity to pay tribute to Ronnie and to his family, especially his sister and my best friend, Glenda.

Uncle Ronnie was the brother of my mother, Juanita. Although he died before I was born, I feel like I know him from my aunts, cousins and mother. I recently watched "We Were Soldiers", that movie will touch my life forever. God Bless you Uncle Ronnie, I Love you!!

Ronnie Thomas Mathis, our nephew, was one of the kindest and sweetest persons in the world. We loved him as if he were our own son. One of the saddest days of our lives was the day we learned that Ronnie had lost his life. We shall cherish him in our hearts, always.

I was the platoon leader of the 1st platoon, Ronnie was my RTO. He was not only there every time I needed a radio, he was there every time I needed anything. After I was wounded he helped carry me and protected me as they fought their way to a clearing to call in the medevac choppers later that day.
