A Note from The Virtual WallOn 21 May 1968 B Battery, 1/40th Artillery, lost two men to an unforeseeable accident - SGT David E. Lemcke of Hilton, NY, and CPL Brent R. Jones. According to the POW Network , Sgt Lemcke and four other individuals were in a personnel bunker. One of the men was cleaning a weapon when it accidentally discharged into a box of illumination grenades. The bunker burned extensively, and there were numerous explosions from the large amount of ammunition stored there.Although Corporal Brent's remains were identified, Sergeant Lemcke's body apparently was entirely destroyed by fire and explosion. |
