A Note from The Virtual WallVery little is known about Captain Johnson's loss. The 221st Aviation Company History for 1966 does contain the following entry:"The 221st lost one pilot and aircraft to hostile fire during the year. Captain Paul W. Johnson [443] was killed and the O-1D aircraft he was flying was destroyed when the aircraft was shot down by enemy ground fire on 22 July 1966 in the vicinity of Can Tho, South Vietnam. The aircraft came under intense ground fire and was struck several times, causing the crash, while in support of a sector operation."Only two American servicemen were killed in aviation-associated incidents in Vietnam on 22 July 1966 - Captain Johnson and Master Sergeant Henry H. Delano of Abilene, Texas, assigned to the 519th MI Bn, 525th MI Group. The 221st Avn Co was based at Soc Trang but maintained a Phong Dinh sector detachment at Can Tho, where MSG Delano was the Phong Dinh sector Intelligence Sergeant. While The Virtual Wall cannot prove it so by documentation, the circumstantial evidence seems clear that Captain Johnson and Master Sergeant Delano died in the same incident. |
The point-of-contact for this memorial is his daughter. E-mail address is not available. |
