28 Jun 2000 Emory Franklin Johnson volunteered for service with the United States Marines. Following training as a combat rifleman, he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. On 24 February 1967 Lance Corporal Johnson received fatal injuries from a land mine. Lance Corporal Emory F. Johnson returned home to Stephens County for burial with full military honors. He is remembered and honored by his community and by his comrades in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Leon Williams Post 4346, Toccoa, Stephens County, Georgia. The Emory F. Johnson Park in Toccoa serves to remind us of his life, his service, and his family's loss. 27 Jan 2007 In memory of a brave Marine, loving husband and dedicated father. I never had the chance to meet my father. He was killed when I was only two months old. I was born before my due date. So his leave was not changed to accomodate my early arrival. He was killed less than two weeks after his return to Virginia to see me and my mom. He was only twenty-four years old. A Note from The Virtual Wall The 1st Bn, 26th Marines' Operations Log for 24 Feb 1967 contains the following entry: "241805 - To Sen3 SPOT Report - C1-3 detonated mine on Rt L4 at 944582. 4 USMC KIA, 1 VN civ KIA, 1 VN WIA. Est 30-40 lbs of explosives." Translated, that cryptic entry says four Marines and one Vietnamese civilian were killed and another Vietnamese wounded by a large mine which exploded on Highway LTL-4 about 4 kilometers east of Ai Nghia. The four Marines, all from the 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, Charlie 1/26, were LCpl Donald A. Chaffin, Fort Wayne, IN; LCpl Emory F. Johnson, Toccoa, GA; LCpl Phillip R. Shoopman, Louisville, KY; and Pfc Victor R. Pastrana, New York, NY.
