John was born in Pecos, Texas and he attended schools in Barstow, Texas, a small community on the east side of the Pecos River on Interstate 20. Barstow is in Ward County but identifies more with Reeves County, the County Seat of Pecos. John graduated from Barstow High School in 1966. The school closed down and merged with Pecos High School many years ago. John attended the University of Texas at El Paso for a year and a half. At the time, it was Texas Western University. He enlisted in the Army in 1968 for the Warrant Officer Flight Program. He did his basic training at Fort Polk, and then Rotary Wing Flight at Fort Wolters and Fort Rucker, and then trained at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield for transition to the Cobra. He completed training in May 1970 and departed for Vietnam in June 1970. The first part of his tour was in the Mekong Delta. He had emergency leave in January 1971 due to his mother's ill health. He returned to Vietnam in February 1971 and joined his unit at Quang Tri. He was officially missing in action on March 6, 1971 when his gunship did not return from a reconnaissance flight over Laos. His remains have never been repatriated. May his sacrifice never be forgotten. He is remembered by the
Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial
in Midland, Texas and by the people of Ward and Reeves County, Texas.
11 Jul 2006 John's case continues. His aunt Charline Pry of Pecos, Texas is now the lead family member in resolving John's case. Over the past 30 years, efforts to resolve the case have gone forward with little movement. In April 2004, the family received documents from the U.S. Army which indicates that the last information was received in the spring of 2001. This was a list of documents which outlined that a Vietnamese man was in possession of John's ID Card, his MAC-V Currency Control Card and a Bank Americard (Bank of Midland) and also had a long bone fragment (John Hummell was about 6 ft 6 inches tall), which was examined by the investigators with negative results (???) in 1989. Allegedly the remains from John were being ransomed. In 2000-2001, attempts were made to locate 4 Vietnamese individuals who may have knowledge but with negative results. One of the individuals allegedly lives in the United States, one in Canada and the other two still in Vietnam. This effort produced negative results. Allegedly, John's remains were buried around Saigon (Ho Chin Minh City) in an area which is now grown up and the area cannot be identified. His aunt states that they are resolved that John is deceased, but still hold out hope to get his remains repatriated.
