Pfc Hippe was killed while walking point on 29 May 1968. Early on the morning of the 29th we moved out of our position to sweep through a bombed out village. After moving approximately 100 yards Pfc Hippe turned and shouted to the squad leader that he saw movement in a treeline. A few seconds later the treeline erupted with automatic weapons and machine guns. The fight that ensued lasted well into the afternoon. Casualties were heavy. I had the opportunity to serve with Pfc Hippe from infantry training at Camp Geiger, NC, until his death. He was a friend and I will never forget him. We had only been in country a few weeks and this was the first action we had been in.

Notes from The Virtual WallDelta 1/3 Marines lost six men killed in action in the fight described above:
Somehow the casualty record got garbled, and when the casualty list for the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington was compiled Pfc Hippe's surname was mis-spelled as "Hippie", an error reflected in today's casualty list and engraved on the Wall:
In 1995, when the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial was being developed, Bradford Hippe's brother contacted the New Jersey organization and requested that his name be spelled properly - and so it is:
Army PFC Charlie A. Carden shares the New Jersey memorial panel for 29 May; he and eight other men from A Company, 1/35 Infantry, were killed in a firefight on 29 May 1966. |
