Gary and I entered Special Forces at approximately the same time. Gary and I served in MACV-SOG in 1966-1967. Gary went to Kontum and I went to Khe Sanh. We were both sent to our camp at Phu Bai at the end of 1966.

We lived and worked together at Phu Bai. Gary was one of those all-around "good guys". He only had one complaint, that was to get out of base camp and on to a Recon Team or Hatchet Force.

Gary finally got his wish and was badly wounded in the leg during one of the most ferocious battles that occurred during my tour with SOG. When his element could not be extracted by air, Gary walked, using his weapon as a crutch, to a point where they could be extracted. No complaining, that was not in Gary's makeup.

The last time I saw Gary was when he came to tell me that he was going back to Vietnam. I couldn't believe it because he hadn't been in the states that long and was still limping from his wound. Didn't give a reason, guess he felt he didn't have to and I would understand.

I saw Gary's name in the Fayetteville Observer casualty report on Thanksgiving Day, 1968. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, 2007 and maybe it is appropriate that this is the time I write about a comrade that I think about often.
