A Note from The Virtual WallOn 31 Oct 1969 C Company, 3/12th Infantry was operating in the mountains about 12 kilometers northeast of the old Plei Djereng airfield. Contact was made with a North Vietnamese Army unit and two US soldiers were killed in the subsequent fighting - then-PFC Dennis L. Gauthier and PFC Daniel L. Starkey of Kent, Ohio. A 1994 Joint Task Force - Full Recovery report summarizes the situation as follows:
PFC Gauthier was carried as Missing in Action, and promoted while in that status, until the Secretary of the Army approved a Presumptive Finding of Death on 15 June 1977. As noted above, his remains are considered non-recoverable. |
The point-of-contact for this memorial is one who wears his MIA bracelet, D Drum spirit76@bellsouth.net |
