I grew up with Walter ... but to all the kids in Laurel Park in Sayreville he was only "Chip".
He was sandy haired and took no crap from anyone in the neighborhood, but he was a good friend and in the circle of us growing up. I moved to Toms River in 1961 before High School leaving the friends of my youth behind. We played baseball in the streets , on the hills of Laurel Park endlessly, in a way that children of today know little about, without organization. It was great! I came back in the early 60's to see Chip, Marty, and Val but as I got into High School the visits became less and then when I enlisted, they stopped. I was in country when he was killed but never heard about his KIA status until I visited Sayreville in 1971. It saddened me terribly as I seem to have missed a portion of my life. My class of 65 from Toms River lost 2 killed and the school as a whole lost nine. He was friend of my youth and he lost the rest of his life sadly. He was a good friend and this tribute is to his memory.
